Are Electrolytes Beneficial to my Health?

Electrolytes

One of the recommendations I was given when first diagnosed with POTS was to add salt crystals to my daily water intake and or take electrolytes. You will not find me leaving the house if I have no consumed a glass of electrolytes. Adding electrolytes became a huge reason why I am able to move my body again.

POTS sufferers have a reduced working of their autonomic nervous system leading to a rapid drop in blood flow reaching the heart and brain, particularly when standing up.

During the initial recovery period, I stuck to the salt method, but have now switched to a daily dose of electrolytes, whilst retaining my increased water intake.  Electrolytes or added salt intake increase the fluid intake and, together with the additional liquids, help to increase blood volume and reduce blood pooling keeping you hydrated.

Certain foods also naturally contain essential minerals and compounds that you can include in your diet.  High levels of essential minerals can be found in:

  • Coconut water

  • Avocado

  • Leafy greens such as, spinach, kale, Swiss chard

  • Bananas

  • Watermelon

  • Almonds

  • Dark chocolate

  • Peanut butter

Homemade electrolytes recipe:

1/4 tsp salt (Himalayan sea salt)

1/4 cup lemon juice

1&/4 cup lime juice

1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut water

2 cups cold water

Check out NuunLife.com. These electrolytes worked the best for me.
